I’ve always been a big fan of mixing my medias. Since I also do paper, fiber, and digital arts, there are always lots of interesting tools and materials hanging around the studio that just beg to be incorporated into jewelry. Over the years, I’ve added everything from piano ivories to metal junk to my pieces. My least complicated advice is to look around your studio, house, trash cans, and children’s rooms, and see what catches your eye!
Now Paula Morgan has written a nice article on About.com’s Beadwork with ideas for how to get going. I’ve also got quite a number of tutorials here, many of which are for mixed media projects. One of my most popular projects can be found there, one that was featured on HGTV awhile back! It all started when I found a container full of optical lenses in a junk store…

The book that I most recommend for those who’d like to get started but need some more guidance is Tammy Powley’s Making Designer Mixed Media and Memory Jewelry. OK, I might be a little prejudiced because some of my work is in there ;-) There are some other great book suggestions in The Library.

I have already tried mixed media jewelry, but want to explore much further. I have been collecting good “junk” to use when I get a chance.
