Crack a Bead Book or 2
When you can’t get to a class, one alternative is to use books to teach yourself. Before going out and buying any book, though, I recommend checking to see what’s available at your local library. That way, if you see a book you think is essentials to have in your own bead and jewelry library, you can buy it with some assurance that you’ll use it.
Over the years, I’ve reviewed a ton of books, covering all kinds of jewelry methods from beads to wire to metal. But, since this is my blog, I’m going to push some of my own books to begin with, and like I said, check with your library first. I know a number of them have these on their shelves.
My book, Making Designer Bead & Wire Jewelry covers both beads and wire, so you’ll learn how to do bead stringing as well as how to make some simple wire findings such as ear hooks and clasps.
For those interested in bead weaving, my book Making Designer Seed Bead, Stone, and Crystal Jewelry is an option. All the projects are based around a few simple stitches, so it’s aimed mainly at the beginner. Some of the stitches you’ll learn are peyote, brick, ladder, and netting.
Finally, my most recent book, Making Designer Mixed-Media and Memory Jewelry covers an assortment of techniques pulled from many of the talented jewelry artists who participated in the creation of the book. Again, I cover basic bead stringing, but there are some unusual and easy techniques to give your jewelry designs a mixed media twist.
Okay, I’m putting my horn down now. I’ve tooted it enough.
