Rock Clubs and Jewelry Classes

by Tammy Powley on September 2nd, 2007

rocklogo.jpgYesterday, I mentioned rock clubs because many of them teach jewelry making and lapidary classes. What else are you going to do with all those rocks but make jewelry with them?

Most of these rock clubs are non-profit so the cost of classes is very reasonable. My local club is very active and has a pretty good sized workshop where they have all kinds of equipment. Newbies can literally come in without a pair of pliers and be furnished with all they need to get started making jewelry. While not all clubs are as well established, most have a least a few classes going on. Between my husband and myself, we’ve taken a huge assortment of classes: faceting, cab cutting, metalsmithing, lost wax casting, wire wrapping, chain making, and beading, all for about $25 for an 8 week class.

If you are trying to find a local rock club in your area, one great resource is the American Federation of Mineralogical Socities. Also, for a list of rock clubs world-wide, the old Lapidary Journal web site has a long list as well.
