Bead ID

by Tammy Powley on February 21st, 2007

side-drilled-beads.jpgA beady friend of mine gave me a bag of these very cool looking glass beads. She found them at our LBS (local bead shop for those not in the know there). I have recently started seeing a lot of lampwork style beads like this popping up where the hole is through the side versus directly through the middle, but I’m trying to figure out what they are called: side-drilled (but these holes aren’t technically drilled); teardrop (maybe); briolette (nah, not right either).

So, any ideas on what these are officiall called?

I’m thinking of using some of them to make some earrings using smoky quartz crystals and gold-filled wire.

How about calling them lampwork dropbeads?
They look pretty, I have not seen any here locally yet……….

I saw some of these in a bracelet recently. Will get back to you on what they were called by the lady who created the piece. ;-)

So, I remembered the answer as soon as I submitted my first reply. I saw them called “boro” beads. Hope that helps. ;-)

Thanks guys. I could the “boro” because they look like they wer made with boro glass, but I’ve seen these also done with other glass.

I’ve never seen these before, but they’re beautiful! I’m have to go find some for myself now.
