Jewelry Has Left the Building
…Or, actually, today the jewelry for my new book, Making Designer Mixed-Media and Memory Jewelry: Fun and Experimental Techniques and Materials for the Home Studio, will be out the door and off to Fedex and onto all the great mixed media artists who helped with this book. I’ve got 25 packages going out today. I’m sure I will totally impress the Fedex office when I carry all of those in there.
One of the things you don’t always think about when it comes to writing jewelry making books is all the clerical type work involved. I had to number and label every single piece of jewelry as well as other items for the book, pretty much anything that was photographed for the book. Then those numbers, item description, artists, etc. goes on an art log, which is used to track all items. The numbers are also used while I write the books to indicate where illustrations and photographs go.
But, this is the very last stage in this long (took a year) process - sending back all of the jewelry. In the past, since I made most of the jewelry, that was usually maybe a dozen or so pieces at the most. But, since this book was a collaborative effort, we had a total of 25 other artists making jewelry for the book. Plus, many of them contributed multiple piece, so you are talking about a lot of jewelry!
In about a month or so, the contributors will receive a copy of the book in the mail, usually about the same time I get a box of my own 12 copies, which I send out to friends and family.
