b5media Arts and Crafts Showcase

by Tammy Powley on January 16th, 2007

Welcome to our second official b5media Arts and Crafts Showcase. We have a wonderful Arts and Crafts channel, and as a way to strut our stuff, we are planning on more showcases in the coming months.

For this month, our them is “All Things New.”

I’ll start with moi - I call this project “Vintage Key Necklace,” and you may remember when I ordered these key stampings off of etsy.com awhile back. This is the necklace I finally made with them. I think it fits in with this theme because of the idea of the vintage keys, and that you can make something old into something new.

And now for the rest of the dream crafting team at b5 - and I’m just going to give you a little peek at som of their arts and crafts goodies - for the whole enchilada just follow the links. Definitely worth the trip!

william.jpgWilliam at The Artist Hideout thinks about the different art techniques he’d like to try his hand at over the next year, including welding, which I think is way cool. He sees this as a challenge, and I tend to agree that before you find your niche you have to try out a lot of different types of art and this can only build your skill level.

Noreen Crone-Findlay, from Hankering for Yarn, has made some new Gulliver Crochet hooks in honour of this month’s showcase. She used one of them to crochet a charming and cuddly (big) lamb. Noreen has also designed a simple new butterfly to crochet, in hopes that winter will loosen it’s grip and spring will come early. Also, she reminds crocheters to join in on the Sisterhood (and Misterhood) of the Travelling Crochet Hook.

a_receiving_blanket.jpgHow clever of Cathy from Tangled Thread to create a baby’s receiving blanket for our theme! What is more “new” than a baby!? This looks like a great project to use up small amounts of material you may have left over, not enough to be scraps but not enough to make anything that big with either. If you have to buy material though, you don’t need a lot of supplies. I love the adorable blanket she’s got pictured.

Stamping Mad has a new take on using doilies in your stamp art. And, just in time for Valentine’s Day next month too. You’ll have plenty of time to make this easy card project she’s posted and bring new life to an old paper doily.

Mary Emma, at QuiltingandPatchwork, started out as a traditional quilter many years ago. She’s continually inspired to learn new techniques from her daughter, Beth. The latest project consists of painting paper towels and turning them into background “fabric” for a mixed media project. Turning paper into fabric, who’d a thunk it?!

margaret-sm.jpgNext up is Layers Upon Layers, our Mixed Media blog. Cyndi was inspired by a poem written by Gerard Manley Hopkins. Her finished piece is a fabric quilt and paper collaged creation. Inspiration is sometimes hard to find, so I loved how she turned to poetry to create her unique piece of visual artwork.

Finally, from the Mad Cropper, is a take on wedding scrapbooks. Our crafting cropper found her inspiration at the Goodwill store. Starting a new life as a married couple is more than reason enough to celebrate “all things new.”

Thanks to all the b5media Arts & Craft bloggers for coming together to create this wonderful showcase!
