Jewelry & Beading

Serious Jewelry Time

by Tammy Powley on September 2nd, 2006

It is already getting close to the holidays because people at my crap-job keep asking me to bring in jewelry for them to buy. Isn’t it awful when you have to be asked to do this and you just don’t have time to even go through the zillions of bags of jewelry around your house to put together a bag of goodies for them to look at, and oh, maybe even buy?

I am also thinking that it is time that I site down and start doing some serious jewelry making, both so that I have some bling to sell at work but also to give as gifts. And, don’t even get me started on holiday ornaments! Yikes!

I’d love to know if I’m the only bead nut who is already feeling the holiday crunch coming when it is still 90 degrees outside!

No, Tammy, you’re not alone! I’ve been making my supplies lists, and have started making things!

Making beaded ornaments is what I do. I’m talking about large, elegant ones that take many hours to finish - but I love it. I share a home with one of my daughters and she designs and sells jewelry. We share a “bead studio” together. She can create dozens of necklaces while I am still working on the same ornament.
I give my one of a kind ornaments to my youngest daughter who has a 10 foot Christmas tree covered with my jeweled ornaments.

Tammy, I think we’ve all had “crap” jobs at one time or another and I know how you feel. Do you try to please everyone? Are you a perfectionist?

I was a gal who had way too many friends and obligations and I was stressed most of the time. I was so busy pleasing others that I never had time for myself.
I had too many projects, too many crafts and I was also writing for a publication twice a month.
And to make a little more money I was dress-making and doing alterations in my home. Something had to give! Life was getting overwhelming and I soon realized I couldn’t handle it all. I gave up knitting, alterations and, yes, even my writing that I adored. I didn’t give up my friends, but I stopped trying to please each and every one of them.
Life is a little easier now and I am having more fun. Oh, I gave up the “crap” job, too, when I turned 50! My gift to myself!
I can tell you love to write, Tammy. You do it very well. Just pace yourself, my dear, so you can enjoy each thing you do.

Wendy - Good for you. I’m not there yet, but I’ve started thinking about it. I probably should just go through what I have already made first and work backwards from there!

Joan - I love making those ornaments too. They are very time intensive, but the results are wonderful. I have a number of them also for my tree that I’ve made over the years. I wouldn’t say I’m a perfectionist, but I do have issues with saying “no.” Right now, the crap job has it’s purpose, a steady pay check and one more year and I’m vested in the state retirement program, but as you guessed, I’d much rather be home writing and making jewelry!

Oh yes! People are really on the ball and already thinking about Christmas presents. I feel like I have made a ton of new jewelry and in a week it’s gone! It’s hard to keep up!

I am lucky enough to not have a crap job or any job for that matter except to clean my house as needed, and minor things like that. But I have recently started making jewelry (mainly) as a hobby, and found out it isn’t as easy as I thought it would be. Personaly I have to string them over at least 4 times to get it like I like it. If I had to do it for a job, it would be much too time consuming. So good thing it isn’t my job, but it is fun to see what I come up with eventually. So far a quite a few People like the results too. I am still too self conscious to show more people. I guess I am worried, I wouldn’t be able to sell anything.
As for the holidays I don’t stress over it very much. To me it isn’t worth it.

Sharla - Cool that your jewelry is all gone. You can always make more.

Susan - Don’t stress too much at this point about selling your jewelry. Just enjoy it and get your techniques down. Bead stringing is not as easy as most people think, as you’ve learned, but it will come with practice.

I am so glad to hear I’m not the only one thinking this way! It seems like the last few months everyone has asked for stuff for Christmas. This will be my first Christmas making jewelry and I hope I have enough time to make it all! I don’t want to complain cuz business is business.. but I have this lingering nightmare that I’ll get all these last minute orders and not be able to complete them!
