Be a Jewelry Designer

by Tammy Powley on May 26th, 2006

Probably the most often question I get asked is how to become a jewelry designer. I finally wrote down my thoughts on this and it has turned out to be one of the most popular articles on my About.com site - well, duh! If people keeping asking, you’d eventually think I’d get a clue, right?

I just wish I’d written this years ago because not only is it popular, I’ve had a number of emails from people thanking me for my honesty and frankness. It ain’t always pretty, but that doesn’t mean it’s not possible either: “I Want to be a Jewelry Designer.”

Your advice is right on target, Tammy. In addition, I would add that the ability to follow directions and make something does *not* make one a designer. We all (probably) make things from other people’s instructions sometimes, but it’s the ability to go off in your own direction and do something unique that makes one a designer.

Excellent point. I am not always sure people get that. I’ve always been the type to just do my own thing. I may look at directions and such, but I rarely follow them. Probably one reason I had such a hard time learn to sew (though I finally did!) and I still struggle with cooking. Luckily, crafts and jewelry making are more intuitive for me, but my point is that even though I was doing this kind of thing - creating projects and one of a kind jewelry - for years, until someone actually called me a “designer” I didn’t know what to call myself!
