Metal Clay Jewelry Overhaul

by Tammy Powley on February 15th, 2006

I’m starting to do a much-needed overhaul on the metal clay section of my About.com Jewelry Making site. One of the problems with working with new technology is that it’s always changing.

At one time, there was one type of metal clay, and it was only sold by Rio Grande. Now, there are at least 2 or 3 producers of metal clay and a dozen or so different flavors.

The first article I updated in my Metal Clay section is “What is Metal Clay?”

Once I get the rest of the articles updated, my next step is to organize them and add what I need to create an on-line Metal Clay E-Course.

It might be good to have a suppliers section for Metal clay. But, then I would say that! :-)

I haven’t done metal clay in awhile. I took a few classes a few years ago, but since then, I just haven’t had the time, and it was a little more involved than I had expected. I do have a metal clay section at my About.com site though.

I have been very intriqued with the idea of trying to start using metal clay, it seems like a great medium for a wide variety of projects. I was wondering about whether overall there is any advantage to using silver over gold. Is either easier to work with?

I’ve never tried the gold clay. It’s pretty pricey, but I would think as far as forming it, it’s probably pretty much the same.
