Necklace Accepted by BeadStyle Magazine

by Tammy Powley on September 7th, 2005

I just heard that my first submission, a beaded necklace, to BeadStyle magazine was accepted! Cool Beans!

I’ve already written about how unique this magazine is, but when I checked into its submission policies, I also found out that they have different guidelines than most other bead and jewelry magazines. You can find out the details on its site, but basically they pay for designs and then the editors write the articles instead of the designers. One tricky thing about this is that any designs have to be made from materials that are easy to come by since the editors actually go out and purchase the supplies and remake the piece for the photographs included in the article.

At first, this seemed weird to me, but when I found out they pay just about as much as many similar magazines pay for a design and written instructions, I figure, hey, cool!

I’m not sure when this piece will be published, but I’ll keep you posted. Needless to say, I’m planning on designing more jewelry for them.

    Congratulations!

But I must say, that does strike me as really weird that they would prefer to write the instructions ~ but maybe it beats having to heavily edit some articles! That is assuming that they can figure out how you did everything. Are the designs in that magazine really simple stringing projects for the most part? I’m not familiar with it.

Well, that’s pretty much the reason. They want to keep the magazine consistent. (I actually emailed them about it because I couldn’t believe they didn’t require that you write the article). Mainly, it’s stringing with a little wire work. They are into the "look" vs. just the technique.

Thanks, Anita. It is a peach pearl and tuquoise necklace. I’ll make sure I blab all about it when it’s published.

Tammy, great news! Congrats! I emailed a few pieces to them and they did not bite on any…boy, it seems tough to get in this one. Some pieces I emailed them you and many others liked a lot. Oh well, maybe I will try again! Let us know when it comes out! Wendy Bialek

I would keep trying, Wendy. It’s really hard to judge what any magazine is looking for, and if you don’t mind writing up instructions, there are plenty of other jewelry magazines out there.
