July is for Ruby

by Tammy Powley on July 23rd, 2005

July is almost over, so I thought it was way past time to celebrate this month’s birthstone: the ruby. My birthday is not during the month of July, but rubies are my all time favorite gemstones. I even passed up diamonds (which I have to admit to never being real fond of) for a ruby stone in my engagement ring, and since then, my wonderful husband has managed to add a few more items to my ruby jewelry collection.
Here are few ruby facts for you:

* The word ruby comes from the Latin word rubrum, meaning “red.”

* Corundum rubies are considered the most valuable in the ruby family of gemstones.

* Burma is probably best known for quality rubies, but they are also found in Thailand, Sri Lanka, Brazil, Siberia, India, and Siam.

* Light rubies that are too light pink in color are called “pink sapphires.”

(The above information came from Simon and Schuster’s Guide to Gems and Precious Stones)

Here is a little ruby folklore for you:

* In ancient times, the ruby was believed to protect the wearer against plagues and is still attributed with healing properties such as protecting the body against disease and helping with circulation.

* Ruby symbolizes love and passion and is connected to the sign of Aries.

* It is rumored that either ruby of garnet was used to form the bowel of the Holy Grail.

(The above folklore came from Healing Crystals and Gemstones: From Amethyst to Zircon)
