Opening a Bead Shop

by Tammy Powley on May 12th, 2005

It seems to be every other beader’s dream to open a bead shop. I was talking about this with a friend of mine the other day. She has a large enough bead collection that could easily fill a store. Like many people, however, she continues to dream, and she has legitimate reasons to do so: she already has a well-paying, fulfilling career in another field, and she has family responsibilities that would, right now, make it impossible to make such a huge change in her life.

But, what if she didn’t have these? What if some day she woke up and life was different and there was nothing but fear of the unknown to stop her from going for it?

What if?

I guess I’m one of the few beaders and jewelry-makers who don’t necessarily dream of a bead shop, or I should qualify that and say, I’d like a bead shop with me as the only customer!

A few years ago, it was nearly impossible to find a bead store, even in a large city. But, today, more and more bead shops are popping up all over the place. Now, whether they can make a go of it is another story, but with the popularity of beading and jewelry making right now, the odds seem to be more in favor of success than ever before.

However, before you quit your day job, it’s important to do some research, and there are a number of companies that actually specialize in offering bead-business consulting services. I’ve started collecting links to some of these companies, so if you wake up one day with the “what if” question on your mind, this might be a good place to start:
Bead Shop Consultants.
