Jewelry/Bead Show Strategies

by Tammy Powley on May 9th, 2005

My husband and I were casually talking over dinner about the wholesale jewelry show we plan to attend this weekend, when it occurred to us that we both hadn’t really agreed too much concerning how much money we’d bring or what we plan to buy. We didn’t have a strategy in place.

If you plan on attending a show with someone, even if you both own separate businesses, it’s a good idea to have a plan of attack figured out. It can save a lot of confusion and time for both of you.

Some things to consider:

How much money do you plan to spend?
If you go with a friend who has a much larger budget than you do and who’ll be pulling out the credit cards right and left, you may not want to shop along with him or her. How fun is it to watch someone else spend money?

What do you plan to purchase?
If you both are interested in vintage crystal beads, then shopping together might work well. You may even be able to split up some more expensive strands. However, if you want to get crystals and your friend plans on purchasing tools or displays, then again, you may have a conflict here

What about food?
Figure out ahead of time if you will stop before, after, or eat while you’re at the show. That way, you can make sure you have both either brought a lunch or know when you’ll eat together.

Possible strategies to try:
- Split up and regroup at an appointed time and place.
- Use cell phones in case you need to go to your car or bathroom.
- Plan to spend the morning separately, and then meet for lunch and spend the afternoon together.

There is a lot to take-in at these shows and sometimes it just works out better to be on your own for a few hours so you can get some serious shopping done.
